MKV, made compatible
MKV (Matroska) can hold almost anything — several audio tracks, subtitles, chapters — which makes it popular for screen recordings and archives. The downside is compatibility: plenty of devices and apps refuse to open it. Converting to MP4 gives you a file that works on phones, TVs, editors and websites.
Fast for OBS recordings
Screen recorders such as OBS usually write H.264 video into MKV. In that case Klipova only moves the video into an MP4 container, so the conversion is lossless and takes seconds. Videos in VP9, AV1, HEVC or other codecs are re-encoded to H.264.
Good to know
- The main video and the first audio track are kept.
- Embedded subtitles and additional audio languages are dropped.
- Choose a lower resolution if you need a smaller file for sharing.
